Digital transformation: why they fail and you will too!

‘Digital transformation is important’

‘You should transform your business’

‘Come to us if you want to successfully transform!’

I know, “probably another person rambling about how I should run my business”, but before you click the exit button, I just to spend 30 seconds sending good vibes your way because you probably been feeling so stressful spending all day long reading about digital transformation, plus observing your competitors getting ready to do it.

All good?

Okay, if you haven’t left yet then I want to say something real quick: probably 50 percent of business owners admit that they only did half of their digital transformation strategies, and, there is a significant amount of business executives think that digital transformation is a waste of time.

Now I don’t want to use your fear against you (don’t judge me by the title of this post), but I will tell you two reasons why not so many businesses succeeded (and you will, too, if you repeat these nonsensical mistakes)

The first problem why many businesses only did half of their strategic plan is because they are lack of agility and flexibility.

It doesn’t matter if you’re transforming your business by yourself or hiring some company to do it for you, you will probably go through these steps: (1) analyzing the business, plus the market, from the management board to the junior software developer, trying to understand the business infrastructure and getting some insights from everyone who you think is holding an important role in the company; (2) coming up with a strategic plan; (3) proving that it will work; and (4) following it.

Now anyone, anyone who works in the industry for so many years can tell you immediately that you will fail, for sure. Even one of the biggest names like Ford did make a mistake when transforming their business so why won’t you make the same mistakes?

The steps that I just listed might sound neat, but you forgot some important things:
  • What are your priorities when it comes to digital transformation?
  • How can it change your business? How will it solve your problem?
  • Will your competitors’ strategies suitable for you? What can we learn from each other?
  • What are the obstacles and opportunities we see?
  • Is every single individual in your company ready for a change?
  • What are your backup plans? - emphasizing plans, not plan
The second thing is leadership and governance in your business
When it comes to transforming business, the one who is in charge of a whole entity plays an important role in it.

If you’re just a manager, is your big, big boss aware and does he or she fully support this process?

And if you’re holding the biggest role in your company then are you really understand the concept of digital transformation? Can you see what’s lying ahead and be an inspiration for your employees?

If you look at the concept of ‘21st-century leadership’ you’ll understand. Being a leader in today’s world is “all about transformation, all kinds of transformation”. A leader who leads from the heart, aligns vision with passion is the main factor for a successful not only business but also any other business’s activities, in this case: digital transformation.
